Chloe Zhao and Gemma Chan tease Eternals details in the latest coverage by Empire. The director and lead star were quoted in the teaser for the new issue for Marvel’s next big movie. Eternals has been a long time incoming after all the COVID delays moved it back over a year. However in November, Eternals will finally be released to fans.
Firstly Zhao spoke about taking this massive step into a blockbuster movie for the first time.
“It’s like sailing,” she says. “You don’t want to take a little journey around the harbour – you want to go out there into uncharted waters to see what you can find.”
Zhao also isn’t one to shy away from murky principles, even alluding to the idea that Thanos, Marvel supervillain and the poster boy for destruction, was misunderstood. “I loved the idea of continuing to challenge the straight-forward morality we’re used to in the superhero genre,” she says.
Star Gemma Chan also talked a little about how she see’s the Eternals characters, saying the narrative is,
“akin to stories of Greek and Roman gods, who live very human lives with human traits, rivalries, jealousies and frailties.”
The Eternals are certainly going to be some of the MCU’s most powerful characters, but surely also a bit messed up? How can you live for thousands ageless years and not end up a little messed up? I have the feeling the story of Eternals will surprise many fans when they get to see the movie for themselves. The story synopsis seems vey straightforward, Eternals need to fight Deviants, they do so and win, end of story. I just don’t see that being the way this movie plays out. Maybe I am wrong, but as said, I think there are going to be many surprises. I think this quote is telling.
“I loved the idea of continuing to challenge the straight-forward morality we’re used to in the superhero genre”.
