Chris Hemsworth Was Almost In X-Men Origins And G.I. Joe

The film industry is a funny thing. Once an actor becomes famous and successful, it’s hard to look back at the time before they broke out and imagine them taking on a different path. In our eyes, they’ll likely forever be associated with the roles that made them famous, but we forget how easily things could have turned out differently, as was the case with one Mr. Chris Hemsworth, who went on to play Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a role he continues to play to this day.

As it turns out, there were at least a couple other films that could have changed the trajectory of his career completely — And I’m not even talking about the roles either tanking or boosting his career, but rather disallowing him from playing Thor altogether.

“I got very close to G.I. Joe,” Hemsworth told Variety, referring to the role that eventually went to Channing Tatum — another actor whose career was bolstered by comedy. “I got very close to Gambit in the Wolverine X-Men movies.” Of course, the man who ended up with that gig in X-Men Origins: Wolverine was Taylor Kitsch “At the time I was upset. I was running out of money. But if I played either of those characters, I wouldn’t have been able to play Thor.”

Of course, the actor also took on a small role in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot as George Kirk, and not long after, went on to play the prince of Asgard himself, Thor Odinson. Needless to say, if he had taken those other roles, his career would be different, and the MCU could have radically different as well, with the character’s comedic side potentially never coming out.
