Christopher Nolan’s Tenet Is Holding On Tight To July Release Date

We can’t even keep track of all the projects that have been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Seriously, these past couple of months have been a whirlwind of news, scares, and delays. Virtually nothing out there has gone unaffected in one way or another. As it stands, we still don’t know when theaters will ultimately reopen, so many future summer releases are a big question mark. Among those are In the Heights and Jungle Cruise. But there’s one filmmaker who won’t be making any preemptive moves.

Of course, I’m talking about Christopher Nolan. He’s a man who’s made a name for himself making big auteur-driven blockbusters. He also commands enough respect from the studio to virtually dictate how and when his films are shown. As it stands, he has yet to relinquish the July 17 release date for his latest movie Tenet.

“We are committed to – and are excited about – releasing Tenet in theaters this summer or whenever theaters reopen,” Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff tole THR. “We remain supportive of the theatrical experience… and are confident that our tentpole titles, including Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984, are exactly the type of films that will have people eager to return to theaters.”

Of course, Wonder Woman 1984 was pushed from its June release to an August one. But, as it stands, they are clinging to that July date for Tenet.

As of this writing, theaters are anticipating a slow re-opening starting around June. This would, theoretically, still mark July 17 as a great spot for any film. Whether or not this will remain true in the months to come remains to be seen. If there’s one thing we know about the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s that it’s an unpredictable beast.

However, should theaters not reopen, I’m expecting we’ll see some change. But with Nolan being such an advocate for the summer theater experience, I can understand why he doesn’t want to budge. He likes his theaters, film, and screens, and letting that go would be quite the give for him.

Fingers crossed that, in a few short months, we’ll live in a reality where going to the theaters won’t be a scary risk.
