Cobra Kai star in talks for Blue Beetle HBO Max

A new report by The Wrap says Cobra Kai star in talks for Blue Beetle on HBO Max. The outlet reports that Xolo Maridueña is in talks to star in the lead role of Jaime Reyes in Blue Beetle for HBO Max, Warner Bros. If this checks out, this would be DC’s first male Latino lead role in their current connected DCEU. Again according to the outlet, the screenplay is from Mexican-born writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who wrote Universal’s Scarface remake and Sony’s Miss Bala. Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto is set to direct.

Now in the comic books there are three different versions of Blue Beetle. The one being developed for this show is reportedly Mexican-American teenager Jaime Reyes. Reyes is third character to assume the Blue Beetle mantle in the comics. Though if this report is genuine then that’s going to change for the film and TV side of the coin. The Wrap, especially Umberto Gonzalez has a great track record with DC inside information. I’m therefore pretty certain that this information is on the level.

Previously it was reported that Dominican-American actress Leslie Grace has won the role of Batgirl for HBO Max. Therefore right now, there is a great amount of Latino representation coming to DC TV and Film. Sasha Calle will be playing Supergirl in The Flash as we all know also. But Batgirl and Blue Beetle are both lead roles in their own shows and that’s big news for the Latino community.

I would not say I am super familiar with the Blue Beetle character, however the one I have the most affinity with was the Reyes version who was used in a lot of the animation from my younger days. Either way, I love comic books movies and shows on the most part, so I have always hoped DC would get their act together. I’m definitely interested in both Blue Beetle and Batgirl. However living in the U.K. we have no HBO Max, and that does make consumption of HBO’s shows problematic. Normally we either get them late and spoiled already or not at all/on a variety of platforms. For example there is currently nowhere in the U.K where you can get the Harry Potter films on a streaming service. Those movies either have to be bought or rented to this day.

If DC’s streaming content really takes off, I might need to subscribe through a VPN. What do you think of the news Cobra Kai star in talks for Blue Beetle on HBO Max? Are you excited for a Blue Beetle show? sound off below.
