Coke Daniels On His Film Karen That Showcases An Uncomfortable Truth [Exclusive Interview]

The Guardian called 2020 “the year of the Karen”.This refers to the term that has flooded meme culture for a white woman seeming to be entitled or demanding in an extreme fashion. Thanks to the internet and social media I don’t think we need to expand on this term any further. Too often we have seen videos of these types making unnecessary phone calls to the authorities for something very trivial. Most of the time making them look very ridiculous. It is what it is.

Well… we don’t have to but Coke Daniels’ satirical social justice thriller titled, Karen definitely can. He wrote and directed the film. The film stars Taryn Manning as your stereotypical Karen but with the volume turned all the way up. She is joined on screen by Cory Hardrict, Jasmine Burke, Roger Dorman, and Gregory Alan Williams.

Here is the synopsis for Karen

KAREN follows Karen Drexler (Manning), a racist white woman who makes it her personal mission to displace the new Black family that has just moved in next door to her. Community activist Malik (Hardrict) and his wife Imani (Burke) are the couple who have just moved to the Atlanta suburb, but they won’t be backing down without a fight.

With Karen being released today, LRM Online’s Emmanuel Gomez spoke with Coke Daniels about the film. In our conversation, we talk about how extreme real cases of “Karens” make Manning’s character less satirical. He praises Manning for the professionalism and artistic input that she put into her character that made it that much better. Also, he mentions how important it is that this film hopefully sparks conversations about some of these kinds of people that sadly exist in our society. You can check out the interview down below!
