Comic Book Review: DC Universe Rebirth #1

I started reading comics in the “New 52” era. In fact Scott Snyder was already in his second arc in Batman. Lucky for me one of my closest friends made sure that I read certain stories from DC Comics amazing legacy. For example Flashpoint Paradox, The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Death of Superman, Blackest Night and so on and so on. So much rich history in characters and story arcs, that to this day I am still trying to catch up with. A lot of that past had gotten lost within the New 52 and DC You, changing a lot these “legacy” characters and in the process making long time readers very uncomfortable. Enter Geoff John’s rebirth.

Without giving too much away, Geoff John’s does a brilliant job at using pre New 52 Wally West as a narrator and as the main character in our journey through Rebirth. Through four chapters we journey throughout the DC Universe and see a variety of our favorite characters in their “natural habitat”. He uses this to kick start your memory, to remind you of what has been missing in the DC Universe for quite some time and at the same time promising that it won’t happen again. This thought is also symbolized in my opinion by the death of a specific character. What about the hand that is reaching out to the DC characters? It was quite a shocker for me because I did not expect that specific character. With that being said, the threat is definitely at an all-time high, it will be interesting to see how this story develops.

Now more than ever I am filled with optimism going forward with DC Comics. Johns has given me the confidence that in fact we are going to get the classic DC characters we all love to follow. DC Comics themselves have backed this up by locking in so much amazing talent to carry out this goal, as well as lowering the price point to be able to pick up these titles without having to dish out 4 or 5 bucks (although Justice League #50 was $5.99 I guess one last price hike for old times sake eh?). With this book in my opinion being a big success, it will be interesting to see the upcoming Rebirth titles for each of character, will they be able to reassure us that better days are ahead? Only time will tell but for now at least we have… hope.
