Today Marvel Entertainment and Conan Properties International announced the return of the iconic Conan franchise to Marvel Comics.

The character is based of the fictional character that was originally created by Robert E. Howard. His first appearance in comics was in Marvel Comics, Conan the Barbarian #1 in October of 1970. It was written by Roy Thomas with artwork by Barry Smith. Marvel continued to publish Conan titles such as his main title Conan The Barbarian, Conan The Adventurer, Conan the Savage and Savage Sword of Conan though 2000 when they stopped.

Conan’s licence was then picked up by Dark Horse Comics in 2003 until the end of this year when Marvel Comics will once again start publishing Conan titles starting in early 2019. Here are some images that were provided to us by Marvel Entertainment.

“‘From Barry Windsor-Smith to John Buscema to Neal Adams, a legendary line-up of amazing artists brought Conan to life in the pages of Marvel comics,’ said C.B. Cebulski, editor-in-chief of Marvel. ‘It’s a legacy we’re now going to live up to with the talent we have lined up for the Cimmerian barbarian’s homecoming in early 2019. We’re excited!'”

“‘We’re thrilled to be working with Marvel and look forward to the new adventures in store for Conan,’ said Fredrik Malmberg, President of Conan Properties International. ‘As the most well-known and creative publisher in the industry, we think Marvel is a great fit for our stories.'”

With this deal in place Marvel Comics will once again be able to bring fans a variety of Conan titles. For now there is no news on the upcoming titles for Conan, collections, reprints or creative teams. Are you looking forward to Marvel once again publishing Conan the Barbarian? • Lenin1959

Hollywood – where is the Conan vs. Predators vs. Aliens movie that could be stupid but big fun?

    • Kratos

      + terminators and vampires

  • Lane Meyer

Are they integrating him into the Marvel Universe? If so, fuck you, Marvel. He doesn’t belong there, let Dark Horse or whoever has been doing the comics so far keep him.

    • randomironicname

Yeah, I think that character works best isolated in his own world. Don’t really need to see him try to join the Avengers.

    • Barry Meltfarb

The Marvel Universe as it exists today was heavily built on Conan. Ever hear of Shuma-Gorath?

  • Curious Cat

    This is Good News.

….. okay something is up with Dark Horse, Star Wars naturally went to Marvel after the Disney Merger but Conan has been doing well at Dark Horse for the past 2003. It’s more likely Conan could crash by 3 years in Marvel’s hand compared to Dark Horse, Image, Boom or anyone else who will let it grow.
BTW, that second cover is Esad Ribic who did Secret War 2015 and Thor but also did Game of Thones cover art

  • Smerdyakov

Is he Hispanic or is he a woman?

    • TamosC

Classically it could be greco-roman..or the berbers of North Africa..certainly not blonde with blue eyes chap.

      • Barry Meltfarb

He’s Cimmerian, a fictional proto-Celtic race invented by Robert E. Howard, not to be confused with the historical Cimmerians.

    • SaiyanHeretic
      • Smerdyakov

I was discussing this number with my wife today. It’s the best number in a pretty dull show. But really, isn’t a more a gay or British problem? Nobody wonders if Germans or Irishmen are gay.

  • Ian Finnimore

Wonder what this means for The Legend Of Conan movie now? A Conan TV series could catch on if the tone was right.

  • Weresmurf

Sure can’t wait for Marvel to gender swap him and give him a social justice angle… (sigh)

    • EmgeeDomville

      Ha! It’s funny because you’re a bigot!

    • SaiyanHeretic

Go read Dynamite’s Red Sonja series, written by Amy Chu, in which Sonja is (apparently) transported to modern times. She even wears pants! Can you imagine?

      • Weresmurf

I quite like Red Sonja, I was disappointed when Rose McGowans movie never occurred.

        • Kratos

did u see the 1985 movie w/brigitte nielsen and ahhh-nold schwarzenegger?

          • Weresmurf

Yeah it was a lot of fun for its time, it was a bit of a pity they had to shoehorn in Arnie as an obvious way to get the Conan crowd in.

  • Mr Smart

My gut reaction here, with Conan’s misogynistic, racist roots in the 1970’s and the books even farther (and more racist) than that, was to begin hyperventilating, vomiting and reflexively begin screaming at the top of my lungs helplessly to the sky.

However, after that normal and natural reaction (when facing bigotry like this) I rethought this as a golden opportunity to fix the disgusting Toxic Masculinity rife in these Conan stories. Swapping the race and/or gender of Conan is a must, obviously. Cimmerians are far too white-looking and there is no reason why Conan could not be femayle or a femayle-to-male transgendered hubeing of color. Each issue can explore a new love interest, as the old bigoted legacy comics would, but this opens new opportunities to showcase DIVERSITY, provided all the love interests are exclusively minorities, gay, trans and other acceptable groups. In due time xhey can proudly highlight every non-white color in the rainbow and start over again when finished.

Obviously, there is room for straight white men… as the villains/victims. Make Thulsa Doom a stand-in for Drumpf and do something fresh and make his followers all alt right white supremacists (this has not been done adequately yet).

This approach, coupled with a copious APOLOGY for the existence of Conan and the prior work being bigoted, rapey toxically masculine trash might just be worthwhile.

    Period.

  • J-man The Great

I’m quite looking forward to Conan the Barbarian in the comics again for the sole reason that it will rustle the jimmies of the SJWs!
