Constantine might be returning in live-action to the not-so-big screen! Unfortunately it sounds like we won’t be seeing the greatest version of John, played by Matt Ryan.
The Illuminerdi has a source, so let’s label this as a rumor. Their source claims HBO Max is working with JJ Abram’s Bad Robot Productions for a new series about everyone’s favorite “master of the dark arts.” This is rumored to be the darkest version of Constantine yet.
It will be less focused on religion, and more focused on the horror elements from the Constantine comics.
Those who have enjoyed the 2005 Constantine film starring Keanu Reeves will be let down by this next detail. It will hurt fans of Matt Ryan’s version of the character even more. Ryan first played the demonologist in NBC’s pretty decent 2014 series. Since then he as been on Legends of Tomorrow for the last few seasons, and the star in three animated DC features.
The Illuminerdi claims the show is looking for a new actor to play Constantine, “with the hopes of casting a BIPOC actor in their late 20’s, similar to a young Riz Ahmed.”
Personally, I think this will piss of current Constantine fans. Like I said, older audiences will remember the time Constantine was a very American, emotionless version as brought to life by Keanu “Whoa” Reeves. But, I feel the reason we have been seeing Ryan in two live-action series and the lead in three animated films is that real Constantine fans love him. I for one, would pass on a show about the character unless it’s Matt Ryan. Even though Constantine is my second favorite DC character.
In closing… MATT RYAN FOREVER! Suck it, JJ. If this rumor is true, I guess he’ll be ruining yet another beloved franchise…
