Can Master of None co-creator’s new film Tigertail be an Oscar contender?

Netflix has done a great job of appealing to both mass audiences and the hoity-toity Academy. They’re easily the biggest streaming service out there. In terms of the quantity of content, they can do circles around all the other stuff. While you could argue they don’t rely enough on making consistent quality content, the reality is they’ve put out some honest-to-god gems that should not be overlooked. From Martin Scorsese to Bong Joon Ho, they have nurtured all sorts of amazing talent.

One other such talented filmmaker is Alan Yang. You may not know his name, but he worked as a writer on Parks and Recreation before going off to co-create Master of None with Aziz Ansari. However, with Aziz Ansari not having much interest in returning to Master of None until he’s grown up more before he made a third season. 

“I don’t have anything else to say about being a young guy being single in New York eating food around town all the time,” Ansari told Vulture back in 2017.

Since then, Yang has been busy with series like Forever, but he’s also been hard at work at his feature debut, Tigertail. Netflix just dropped the first trailer for the multi-generational drama down below! Check it out!

Below is the official synopsis for Tigertail:

“A Taiwanese factory worker leaves his homeland to seek opportunity in America, where he struggles to find connection while balancing family and newfound responsibilities in this multi-generational drama from writer-director Alan Yang.”

The film is set to hit this coming April 10. While that’s quite a ways away from Oscar season, I can see it as a solid contender. With its emphasis on family and amazing talent behind the camera, I think it’ll be entertaining, at the very least.
