Audiences converge at the Micheaux Film Festival for one of the most diverse lineups in indie filmmaking.
Now in its fifth year, the film festival features a lineup of films of cultural expression showcasing every background and multiple narratives targeting very human experiences.
The event takes play starting tonight, July 10, through Sunday, July 16, at The Culver Theater and Regal Cinemas L.A. Live.
This year’s theme is Outliers, inspired by the seminal book by Malcolm Gladwell that will celebrate individuals that defy the odds in the face of adversity.
For opening night, My Home Unknown makes its world premiere. The drama is about a schizophrenic homeless woman in search of a home. It was written and directed by Yaz Canli.
The festival closes out with a studio film from Sony Pictures Gran Turismo starring Darren Barnet, Orlando Bloom, David Harbour, and Djimon Hounsou. Neill Blomkamp directed the film from the screenplay by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin.
Gran Turismo is based on a true story about a gamer from its very popular PlayStation racing simulation video game who later becomes a real race car driver.
Other notable films at this festival include Scrap, starring Vivian Kerr and Anthony Rapp, gun violence documentary Bad Things Happen in Philadelphia, the Los Angeles premiere of A Pretty Good Movie starring Lea Thompson and John Huertas; the world premiere of Borat-style unscripted comedy Nowhere Men, and the Los Angeles premiere of Good Egg that follows Jessica Nieves-Sanders after two failed in-vitro attempts.
