Dan Didio Leaves DC Comics – What We Know So Far

Multiple outlets are reporting that Dan DiDio is no longer employed at DC comics. First reported by Comicbook.com as having been “removed” from his position that particular phrasing has been removed, but the fact that DiDio is no longer there has been confirmed by DC though no other information has been forthcoming.

DiDio, 60, is just the latest departure of an executive at the company which has seen many top staff members leave since AT&T acquired Warner Brothers. Also, we have seen an exodus from editorial, included Alex Antone, only a few days ago which some have seen as a troubling trend. How much DiDio’s departure was influenced by higher ups at AT&T and DC’s AT&T appointed overseer, Pamela Lifford, we may never know.

This brings the Didio era of DC to a close after 18 years. He was originally hired in 2002 to as Vice President-Editorial and then promoted to Vice President/Executive Editor in 2004. Since 2010, Didio, along with Jim Lee, has held the position of Co-Publisher. Lee has the added responsibilities of Chief Creative Officer added to his duties following the departure of Geoff Johns in June of 2018.

Although Lee and DiDio both had the title of Publisher, DiDio certainly seemed to be the more public face of DC and appeared to be the one steering the ship creatively. What his leaving mean for the Generation Five initiative is very much up in the air at this point. What is clear from fan and creator reaction on-line is that DiDio’s tenure was very polarizing and will be remembered for the controversy that seemed to always follow creative decisions during DiDio’s tenure.
