Danny DeVito Wanted To Make A Matilda Sequel

Obviously, the content we watch as kids plays a big role in a lot of the stuff we like growing older. These past couple of weeks with Disney+ has reminded just how much of my childhood was shaped by crappy Disney Channel original movies, but of course, there was plenty of good that bled into my film diet as a kid. I had plenty of Star Wars at my disposal, and the amazing movie Matilda, which was based on the Roald Dahl novel of the same name.

The film was directed by (and starred) the great Danny DeVito, who is one of the industry greats. His take on the character was warm, fun, lighthearted, all with a touch of darkness that fit the source material incredibly well. Though the novel never had a sequel, he apparently had one in mind, as he shared with ComicBook.com.

“I always wanted to do Matilda 2, but when the kid was still a kid,” DeVito told the outlet. “But that was like 20 years ago, 25 years ago. Maybe Matilda has a kid and we can do something that, I don’t know.”

It doesn’t sound like he’s too committed to the idea of a Matilda sequel all these years ago, but perhaps he doesn’t really have to be. Enough time has passed that we’re overdue for a remake of some sort. In fact, Netflix has the rights to turn a ton of Dahl’s books, including Matilda, into animated fare.

“Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl’s stories,” said Roald Dahl’s widow, Felicity Dahl, “This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled.”

Production has been underway this year, and while we don’t know when it’ll come and which material it’ll be, there’s plenty of reason to be excited.
