I never thought a Lethal Weapon 5 would happen. Not so long after Lethal Weapon 4, not after all the drama with Mel Gibson, surely the actors are too old now to come back to those roles? However, it seems as if a new Lethal Weapon script is on the table.
Danny Glover recently spoke with Variety about a whole host of subjects. However, talk did turn to Lethal Weapon. Here is what Glover had to say about the reports of plans for Lethal Weapon 5.
“There has been a conversation about that in January. I don’t want to give away the plot on the script that I read, but I found the plot had very strong relevance to some of things that are happening today. I can say that. But that was in January. History changes so fast…But yes, there’s been talk about it. There is something of a plan.”
Asked if Glover is interested in filming that script, he responded.
“Yes, I liked it. I can only tell you, if it does happen, there is something extraordinary in it. If Lethal Weapon gives us some sort of contribution to understanding a little bit more…It would be interesting to do. It would be interesting to see how we take this within the political framework we are in; the economic framework that we are in. And especially that framework as opposed to the communities that have been affected by the kind of police violence, the kind of police standards, and the power that they exert as well. And what would be interesting from that vantage point is what that attempt could be like at this particular moment, and maybe it will attempt to confront the issue head on, within whatever script comes out.”

It is a strange time perhaps to push ahead with another Lethal Weapon . The police not currently being seen as heroes doesn’t help. Add to that the fact that Glover will be 74 later this month, surely too old to play a police officer? Roger Murtaugh was nearing retirement in the first Lethal Weapon movie. Surely he can’t still be catching punks in his 70’s with his young(64) partner Riggs?
Like my thoughts with Indiana Jones 5, they should have made this years ago. By 2020 both Murtaugh and Riggs would be long retired or moved into a political position. Maybe set it a few years earlier, have Roger already retired and Riggs about to join him? But then what would Murtaugh’s role be?
I’m just not sure Lethal Weapon will work anymore with these characters. However, I’ve enjoyed the other Lethal Weapon movies, so I guess we shall see? Do you want to see Lethal Weapon 5? How would you make it work? Leave your thoughts below if you can.
