Dark Phoenix: More Trouble For The Final Fox Studios X-Men Film As It Has Lowest Opening In Franchise History

Dark Phoenix has had a rough week. Its initial rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes was a pitiful 18% (as of this writing it has climbed to 22%) and it was expected to pull in a disappointing $50 million for its opening weekend. Why is $50 million disappointing? Because that would have been less than the widely panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine and a nearly half as less as Days of Future Past. To be fair though, this movie has had a rough time being made, being promoted, and being relevant in light of the Disney/Fox buyout.

After initial estimates started falling over the last 48 hours, we now have the official Box Office Mojo weekend estimates and it is a franchise low $33 million. X-Men Origins: Wolverine brought in $53 million and the previous film for this franchise, X-Men Apocalypse, took in $66 million. To make matters worse this film had an estimated $200 million production cost thanks in part to extensive reshoots. This movie was being rewritten during production, which isn’t completely unheard of but definitely makes the film more expensive. It also causes the film to feel off and choppy due to different writers and takes on different scenes that may never have meant to be put together.

Most of the time we consider a movie to have made a profit if it doubles its production costs, but that’s just a rough rule of thumb as the actual amount of profits shared between theaters and the studios can vary from film to film and market to market. The international market will be the deciding factor in this film’s profitability. It’s clear that domestic audiences do not care too much for this film, but it has an estimated $107 million take from around the world so far. It is possible that Dark Phoenix turns a profit as Apocalypse made $388 million worldwide. It’s going to be a tough fight though.
