Dark Phoenix On Track To LOSE $100M?

I try my best to be positive when it comes to upcoming projects and box office performance. In today’s fanboy-laden world, it’s easy to write off every successful movie at the box office simply because it didn’t break every record known to mankind. Some fans like to continue shifting the goal posts as their box office run continues so they can spin it as an “underwhelming” performance. We saw it with movies like Aquaman and we saw it with Captain Marvel.

But even I can’t deny that Dark Phoenix has been a bit….underwhelming? Okay, that’s a generous statement. Let’s be real. It’s a huge bomb. An atom bomb. This was a movie whose $50 million to $55 million opening weekend expectations were already being called “disappointing.” And then the weekend came and went, and all it had to show for it was a measly $33 million. This ain’t good.

This is the worst debut of any X-Men movie to date — including the first movie, which launched in the year 2000. Yes. It launched in the only year in existence that we can add “the year” in front of and have it make sense. Now, Deadline is reporting that it could lose $100 million to $120 million, after it takes in roughly $300 to $325 million worldwide.

The outlet states that, including reshoots and advertising, the film cost $350 million, and that means the studio won’t even be recouping their basic costs — even before you take into account the theaters themselves needing a cut of the movie. And this isn’t even taking into account if the movie plummets in weeks to come.

The film had a CinemaScore of B-, meaning that it is VERY possible this thing could continue to impress us with its box office failures.

As a fan of the franchise, and as someone who genuinely wanted to see this movie and its director succeed, this is incredibly sad, but I guess this is what happens when you put a movie out that will ultimately not matter, with the characters heading back to Disney.
