In the last episode of DuckTales, “The Duck Knight Returns,” the entire episode was centered around Darkwing Duck as if the Batman-inspired title didn’t give that away. Last year, I stated that a comeback of the masked mallard could triumphantly be on the way but a few hurdles blocked the path. The main obstacle was the fact that the character was only on television rather than being an actual crime-fighting superhero.
The new episode introducing a new actor, Drake Mallard, replacing the aging original portrayal of the character, Jim Starling, fixed these issues. At the end of the episode Mallard, named after the Darkwing Duck series, devotes his life to crime fighting saying that “he is better than Gizmoduck.” Meanwhile, Starling thought to be dead is driven mad and turns into the nefarious Negaduck creating a perfect juxtaposition of characters and a great character arc for Starling.

While I anticipated a Darkwing comeback in some fashion this episode was the perfect ode to the original series mixing nostalgia with world building. I doubt that we will be getting a spinoff anytime soon as Darkwing will likely get the same treatment as Gizomoduck being a cameo with occasional spinoff episodes. For now, let’s just rejoice about the return of the duck who flaps in the night and look to the future for more appearances.
