Dave Filoni On Why Lars Mikkelsen Had To Be Thrawn In Ahsoka

In a recent interview Lucasfilm chief creative officer Dave Filoni teases Thrawn's future in the Star Wars MandoVerse.

In a recently released interview from Star Wars Celebration, Dave Filoni comments on why Lars Mikkelsen had to be the Thrawn in Ahsoka. Although the interview was conducted quote some time ago, ET Online only just released it a few days ago. You can watch the video below for yourself or skip to the transcript below.

“Oh, I think it’s a very considered decision. You know you have to like. He was in Rebels obviously and I loved working with Lars it was very fun.”

“It was a very big challenge to cast the voice. You know, how do you find a voice for a character that everybody who has read it, pictured it probably in a different, unique way?”

“Eventually, that led me to Lars, and we were all very happy with his performance in Rebels. Coming to this, talking to Jon I said ‘It’s going to be very hard to beat Lars. Because Lars is in my head.’ The sound of his voice is kind of what I write to.”

“But you know, we do our due diligence and ask ourselves who else? But I always come to back to Lars. Now it’s gotta be Lars’ and Jon’s like ‘Okay.’ But you got to ask yourself honestly. Because this is it, you get one shot at this.”

“But I couldn’t be happier, now it’s Lars. He looks wonderful in blue. Not everybody does, so that’s a factor and we worked on the eyes so…it’s a unique thing to bring this character to life.” But he does it so well, just walking on stage, he’s right over there. It’s just his presence, his stature. There are many factors that he’s able to deliver on, and I couldn’t be happier.”

As yet we viewers have yet to see Mikkelsen as Thrawn in Ahsoka. We know we will from that small shot we got in the trailer. However, for all we know, it could be that Thrawn doesn’t appear until the season finale?

I do like Mikkelsen’s voice for Thrawn in Rebels and I know what a great actor he is, so I think this is a great choice to make for the show. Especially as this is around a decade at least after the climax of Rebels.

Remember it was LRM Online who first claimed Mikkelsen was the live-action Thrawn, and there were many leakers who claimed we were wrong. We rarely do any leaks these days. However, when we do, we have a very good hit rate.

What do you think of the comments of Dave Filoni on why Lars Mikkelsen had to be the Thrawn in Ahsoka? As always, leave any thoughts below.
