The BBC have announced that David Tennant and Catherine Tate return as the Doctor and Donna for the 60 Anniversary Who Special. Tennant starred as the 10th Doctor many years ago now and has already made one return previously in Day of the Doctor. However Tennant’s Doctor Who co-star for one glorious season was British comedian Catherine Tate. Tate played Donna Noble in the show and the pair became, for me, the greatest doctor and companion pairing the show has ever had in it’s long years.

The partnership ended (in-Universe) when Donna became a version of the Doctor herself, which made her brilliant, but unable to handle what a Time Lord can in her human body. Facing death, Tennant’s doctor is forced to erase Donna’s memories of him completely. If Donna doesn’t remember him, she will never transform and will lead a normal life. Tennant’s doctor died himself soon after, he sacrificed his own life to save that of Donna’s father Wilf. Of course, as always with Who, the 10th Doctor regenerated into the 1tth (Matt Smith) and the show carried on.

Now I really enjoyed Smith’s run also, and he had some great companions in Amy (Karen Gillan) and River Song (Alex Kingston). Tennant equally had a great relationship with his previous two companions Rose Tyler and Martha Jones. However, again, this is just an opinion, there was just a chemistry between Tennant and Tate that was like lighting in a bottle. No romance nonsense for a start, and Tate’s comedic stylings allowed Tennant to play the straight man more than he had previously. It was magical, and as such, I will be watching this 60th Anniversary Who Special when it hits. I wouldn’t miss it.
As we covered last week Tennant and Tate will likely have a new third wheel in the special, that of new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa. One would expect Gatwa to be the main star of the Special, however that hasn’t been made clear. Even then, one can also hope showrunner, the also returning Russel T. Davies will allow Tate and Tennant to spark off one another again, just for old time’s sake.
Davies has teased fans, saying: “Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.”
