DCEU To Focus More On A Less Connected Universe, Warner Bros. Film Head Says

When Marvel’s now famous MCU first broke through it was commonly regarded as the poorer cousin to Warner Bros DC slate of movies which included the likes of Nolan”s Dark Knight Trilogy. Then, after Avengers smashed the box office in 2012, everyone including WB were playing catch up to try their hand at their own cinematic universe.

I am sure I don’t need to go through everything that’s happened up till now with the DCEU, but things probably hit their lowest point with the box office flop of Justice League. Since then Aquaman has done very well both domestically and abroad and perhaps things are finally looking up for the DCEU, especially with having snatched up James Gunn to write and direct The Suicide Squad.

One of the things we are unsure about as fans is how connected everything is going to be, Birds of Prey seems connected, Aquaman was kind of connected. But will The Suicide Squad be connected, will Joker be connected? (The latter seems unlikely)

LA Times got the chance to sit down for a chat with WB’s head of Film and TV Kevin Tsujihara and here is what he said when asked about the future of the DCEU.

“The upcoming slate, with Shazam, Joker, Wonder Woman 1984 and Birds of Prey, feels like we’re on the right track. We have the right people in the right jobs working on it. The universe isn’t as connected as we thought it was going to be five years ago. You’re seeing much more focus on individual experiences around individual characters. That’s not to say we won’t at some point come back to that notion of a more connected universe. But it feels like that’s the right strategy for us right now.”

When asked what clicked with Wonder Woman for audiences.

“What Patty Jenkins did on Wonder Woman illustrated to us what you could do with these characters who are not Batman and Superman. Obviously, we want to get those two in the right place, and we want strong movies around Batman and Superman. But Aquaman is a perfect example of what we can do. They’re each unique and the tone’s different in each movie.”

I generally find all this pretty confusing, are they going standalone or are the connecting these? Some of them seem one way and others the opposite. Aquaman is surely connected to Justice League, I mean they even reference the fact he defeated Steppenwolf.

I do hope Tsujihara means what he says about Superman, of all the movies in my mind that WB could be doing with DC, I feel the urgency of a new Superman movie to be of highest priority. However, I am not the one paid to make those decisions, so instead you’ll be getting The Suicide Squad, Joker, Aquaman 2, Wonder Woman 1984, Birds of Prey and perhaps more Harley Quinn movies after that.

To cut a long story short I just don’t get the feeling that this is the right movies for WB to be focussing on, there is very little here that excites me as fan in the way that a new Superman movie would do.
