DC’s Action Comics #1000 Is 2018’s Best Selling Comic Book

Marvel, DC Comics, Image, Dark Horse, and IDW are some of the comic book industries’ top publishers. It is in the pages of their comic books that we get a lot of our favorite series and films. To many times comic books are seen as kid’s books instead of the amazing stories that can entertain people of all ages. With 2019 now well underway, Diamond Comic Distributors has released the numbers for 2018 as far as sales and most sold comic books. You can check out the top lists below.

Not much of a surprise at what book is at number one with DC Entertainment celebrating it’s landmark issue #1000 of Action Comics. The eighty page giant issue featured an all-star line up of DC talent including Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, Tom King, Dan Jurgens and so many others which of course included the arrival of Brian Michael Bendis to DC Comics. DC also featured two other titles in the top ten single issues of 2018 including Batman #50 at number three and Batman Who Laughs #1 at number nine.

The rest of the list was dominated by seven titles from Marvel Comics, four of which were written by the same writer Dan Slott including Amazing Spider-Man issues #800, #1, #798 and #799 as well as the long awaited return of the Fantastic Four. Marvel also owns the top graphic novel of the year with The Infinity Gauntlet, the classic crossover event from Jim Starlin, George Perez and Rom Lim that has paved the way for the storyline Marvel Studios is currently wrapping up in this years’ Avengers: Endgame film.

Overall single comic book sales went up 3.3% from last year, while the sale of graphic novels fell 6.6% from the previous year. When you combine the two, sales were up slightly in 2018 by .6%. Marvel Comics continues to be the top publisher with a 38.24% Dollar Market Share and a 40.4% Unit Market Share. DC of course came in second with a 30.04 Dollar Market Share and a 33.82% Unit Market Share. The numbers have not changed too much from 2017, to say that anyone really made a significant jump or decline.
