DCU Needs Its Batman And Game Of Thrones Bigger Influence Than MCU

According to DCU bosses the franchise needs its Batman and Game of Thrones and Star Wars were bigger influences than MCU. Of course DC Studios bosses are Peter Safran and James Gunn. The pair spoke with Brazilian outlet Omelete recently.

Safran, whilst still supportive of Elseworlds movie The Batman Part II, says the DCU also needs its own Batman.

“I think we’ve been very clear about Batman. We love Matt Reeves, and we’re dying to do Batman: Part II. Like I said, we’re always going to do some projects that are primarily auteur-driven. Those are projects that we call Elseworlds.”

“Obviously, we need a Batman in the DCU, and so we’re developing ours as well, even though Matt’s movie is under our tent and part of DC. We’ll do Batman: Part II, hopefully, when Matt is really ready for it, when he turns in the script. And then we’ll also do our Batman and Robin story, The Brave and the Bold.

DCU Batman should definitely be a priority. Counter to what some fans think they want, I’m not sure The Batman‘s version of Gotham would work in this DCU, based on what we hear of Superman.

As Gunn explains, the DCU is a sandbox of possibilities, less like the real world than the MCU.

Game of Thrones, not just the show but the books, is what we’re using as a reference for the DCU. The DCU is not the MCU. The MCU is kind of our world. It has New York, it has this city or that city, with superheroes in the middle. The DCU is a different universe. Slightly different, slightly transformed.”

“At the same time, I also draw a lot of inspiration from Star Wars, Game of Thrones and other things that tell different stories within the same continuity. It’s not about telling just one story.”

Let’s see if it works out. I think we must remember that early MCU and Game of Thrones were so popular because it was all connected and leading to some perceived larger event. One landed the ending, then kept going anyway with lesser stories, the other one dropped the landing hard and ruined the legacy of the show. Can the DCU pull it off?

So, the DCU needs its Batman and Game of Thrones and Star Wars were big influences on the franchise. Let us know what you thought of the DCU bosses comments?
