Deadpool Could Retain R-Rating Under Disney, Says CEO Bob Iger

The future of Deadpool is one big question mark. There have already been a lot of rumors surrounding other potential Merc with the Mouth outings, including a supposed cancelation of X-Force, a film that will continue the adventures of him, Cable, and Domino. Conversely, star and producer Ryan Reynolds has also shared that they were looking at shaking things up with the third Deadpool film.

This is all taking us into unknown territory, as its parent studio, Fox, is just about finished being acquired by Disney. Of course, Disney has made their empire doing family-friendly movies, and as much as Deadpool 2 touted itself as a family film, it’s not a family-friendly film in the same way Ralph Breaks the Internet is (I don’t think it’s a huge surprise that I’m saying that). As such, we can’t help but wonder if Disney will continue the franchise, and if they do, if they’ll be keeping the R rating.

While at a first-quarter earnings call, Iger said (via CBM) that the films could continue on with an R rating. However, if they were to do so, they would have be “carefully branding [R-rated films]…so we’re not in any way confusing the consumer.”

What does that mean? The outlet speculates they’ll be nixing the Marvel Studios logo, which is probably the right idea. This means the Deadpool could continue on in his own pocket universe. This does, however, make us wonder what that could mean for a potentially R-rated Black Widow film. Do these comments make that whole idea impossible? We’ll eventually have all the answers…but it likely won’t be for another several months as things settle down and announcements are made.

Do you think Deadpool should always be rated R, or is a Once Upon a Deadpool approach a worthy template for future films under Disney? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
