Deadpool Projected To Hit $150M In Opening Weekend

This summer is a crowded one, but even with Avengers: Infinity War, I think one of the top five most anticipated films of the season is none other than Deadpool 2, the sequel to the 2016 original that exceeded all expectations. But could this sequel possibly surpass the original’s surprising $132 million opening?

A couple weeks back, we reported on early projections that pegged the film at a $100 million-plus debut, which wouldn’t be altogether surprising, given all the competition. However, in the time since then, Deadpool 2 has been rolling out some competitive advertising, including a couple posters and an amazing trailer.

Now, according to Deadline, it sounds like that’s raised the expectations more. Now, early industry tracking indicates that it could very well hit $150 million. This would also make sense since Fandango recently reported that the film was their biggest R-rated advance ticket seller ever, even beating out Fifty Shades of Grey.

The only thing that seems to be going against Deadpool 2 is the fact that Solo: A Star Wars Story is coming out just one week after. Will audiences choose Solo over Deadpool 2, or will the Merc with the Mouth eat up the Star Wars film’s sales? Who knows? Even at this stage in the game, these predictions fluctuate based on the buzz in the moment.
