The cinematic universe built by Marvel is quite an achievement in storytelling. And up until recently the vast majority of the content contained within it was family-friendly. With Marvel reacquiring the rights to Deadpool the Marvel Cinematic Universe will for the first time be home to an R-rated film in Deadpool 3.
However, the R-Rating is likely only to be explored with Deadpool. And perhaps the biggest factor in this decision is Marvel doesn’t want to mess with a proven formula. I mean, if it ain’t broke…
The man behind Marvel, Kevin Feige says there are no current plans to explore this sort of content beyond the Merc with the Mouth. Though the studio appears to be open to the idea of other R-Rated content should a particular story require it. This information comes from Aaron Couch’s ( editor of The Hollywood Reporter‘s HeatVisionBlog) Twitter account. You can check out the post below.
Feige says other than #Deadpool3, there are still no plans to explore R-ratings for the MCU. Naturally, if there is a story where that would make sense, sure they would discuss it. (i.e. don’t hold your breath for an R-rated Marvel project outside Deadpool)

This is not surprising. Once again, if it ain’t broke…
Marvel’s exception for Deadpool is completely understandable. I’m sure that Marvel can see the potential fan backlash if they reverted Deadpool back to PG-13. Especially since fans have already been given the vulgar, hilarious, heartwarming, and R-rated version. Taking that away probably wouldn’t be good for business.
Deadpool being the sole R-rated property will make it easier for casual fans and parents to differentiate. I know, one would assume the clearly labeled MPAA rating would work just fine. But that didn’t stop parents from bringing their children to Deadpool back in 2016. Hopefully, by now the majority of moviegoers are more aware of what Deadpool brings to the party.
