Deadpool & Wolverine gets a major box office boost as news of a day and date China release drops. As reported by Deadline, word has come through that Marvel’s only movie of 2024 will be the first for a while to get a simultaneous China release.
We all know China decided which movies to release on a film by film basis. However, it is also undeniably a massive box office draw when it does happen.
As per the trade;
‘China’s Film Bureau has approved a July 26 release for Disney/Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, arguably one of the most anticipated movies of the year globally. Marvel’s Weibo account announced the dating this morning Beijing time which Disney has confirmed. The release is day-and-date with the U.S. and marks the first time the Merc with a Mouth is going to China in step with the rest of the world.’

I don’t even pretend to understand why China decides on certain films, and not on others. I mean, we know it’s all a form of political control. However, the when’s and where’s can be harder to fathom. For example, the only Deadpool movie that has released so far in China was the rejigged One Upon A Deadpool PG-13 version.
Maybe Wolverine is just too popular in China? Either way, Disney will be licking their lips at the news as it could add an extra $40-$50 Million to the overall box office. Probably more, as Once Upon a Deadpool managed $40M itself.
So far Deadpool & Wolverine is tracking well to be a success at the box office. Yet, will it really compare to the pre-pandemic numbers? There are still so many local cinema’s in the US which never opened back up. Things are slightly less drastic in my home nation. Though, let’s face it, Britain is a small statistic compared to the domestic box office expectations.
