Deadshot’s Recasting In Suicide Squad Hints At A More Important Role In James Gunn’s Film

By this point, you’ve likely heard the news that Will Smith will be sitting out the next Suicide Squad film from writer-director James Gunn, and that fan favorite actor Idris Elba would be taking on the role of Deadshot. Considering how big of an actor Smith was, this was a bit of a surprise, but apparently, the scheduling conflicts were so egregious that it could not be avoided. So what does this mean for Deadshot’s role in the film?

THR is reporting that this heavily hints at a huge role for the character in the next film. After all, were this just a small role that could be written out, recasting simply would not be necessary, right? With that in mind, the outlet tapped into their sources to figure out just where the story can go that would necessitate the need of Deadshot.

According to them, Gunn’s film will likely center mostly around the character, and will draw from Jon Ostrander and Kim Yale’s ’80s run of the comic, which is in stark contrast to the more recent New 52 iteration of the series, which inspired David Ayer’s film. As a result, we’ll be seeing a lot of older, less familiar characters (as previously reported, there are a handful of new villains to get picked off), and likely a much more jaded Deadshot.

The outlet states that we will likely see a suicidal Deadshot — one who is “looking for a worthy way to die,” and as a result, sees him taking on incredibly dangerous missions. They go on to say that this approach seems like the perfect kind of material for Gunn to explore, considering his track record, and honestly, it does make sense. As a result, it’s unclear what they’ll be doing with the father-daughter angle of the first film, but it sounds like they’ll be leaning away from it in some way.
