Tom Cruise is shredding his temporary action-film star image with an unrecognizable eccentric character in Digger.

Fans will certainly be delighted to see a performance like this from Cruise since his unforgettable role as Les Grossman in 2008’s Tropic Thunder. And it’ll be a film to watch, full of Academy Award winners and nominees in the cast and crew.

Here’s the brief description:

The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.

Academy Award winner Cruise teams up with Academy Award-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu in this original comedy disaster film. Iñárritu wrote the screenplay with Oscar winners Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, and with Sabina Berman, based on the story by Iñárritu and Berman.

The superb cast includes Oscar winner Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Oscar nominee Jesse Plemons. The rest of the cast includes Robert John Burke, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman, and Sophie Wilde.

With this cast and crew lineup, it sets itself nicely for the awards season, especially with more Oscar-winning cast and nominated crew, including the director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki, costume designer Jacqueline West, make-up and hair designer Alessandro Bertolazzi, casting director Francine Masiler, production designer Dennis Gassner with Richard Johnson, and prosthetic makeup designer Kazu Hiro. It’s the who’s who of Academy Awards history.

Digger lands in theaters on Friday, October 2.
