Director Patty Jenkins ‘Never Say Never’ To Directing Justice League 2 — But Not Yet

The current state of the DCEU is still very much in flux, though there have been recent successes to add to the flops. Both Wonder Woman and Aquaman have made a very good return at the box office though Wonder Woman was more critically acclaimed than Aquaman ( I preferred Aquaman).

But with Justice League being an absolute disaster critically and financially, and with rumors spread that the movie cost an absolute fortune to make, it seems like any further adventures of DC’s superteam up are on hold indefinitely. Which, is a shame, because getting one movie wrong doesn’t mean characters like Superman, Batman and the rest cannot sell tickets. Fans didn’t reject the characters, they rejected a movie butchered between two different directors with very different ideas and directions from the studio. Never mind Mustachegate, which annoys me anytime I see the movie playing.

So when Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins was asked whether she’d ever be interested in directing Justice League 2 by THR at the recent Sundance Festival, she wasn’t against the idea. However, she also warned that jumping straight into another Justice League movie would be a mistake right now, and on that note, I have to agree with her. Here is what the director said.

“I find those movies to be extremely challenging. I think they’re fantastic when they’re well done, but taking on all of those characters at the same time and the timeline. I sort of hope that we don’t do a Justice League movie for a little while, because I think that each of those characters are really great. I’m super excited to see each of their movies. I want to see Aquaman 2, and I want to see Flash. I don’t know. I would never say never, but I think everyone should have a moment to shine right now.”

I completely agree in principle with what Jenkins is saying here. Justice League was rushed out the door far too quickly and the evidence is there already. Man of Steel was a decent if not wonderful movie, Aquaman was a good movie, and Wonder Woman was a good movie. The less said about Suicide Squad the better, but that suffered from studio interference also and yet still made a lot of money.

What DC and WB should have done was take their time. Man of Steel, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Man of Steel 2, The Batman, Flash and then finally Justice League. Sure it copies Marvel’s phase 1, but there’s a reason that worked and it’s not because every phase 1 Marvel movie was amazing, because they were not. However, we are where we are and for me, now that we have had Aquaman and we are also getting Wonder Woman 84, we need to see Flash, Superman and Batman movies before they even attempt another Justice League.

The problem is that Batman’s next movie seems to be taking longer to write than George R. Martin’s next chapter of A Song of Ice and Fire. Not to mention that for some reason WB/DC are pinning all the blame of Justice League on Henry Cavill’s Superman and the actor doesn’t even know if there are any plans to make a Superman film. No, instead WB are pushing ahead with what seems to be a Harley Quinn trilogy, because Margot Robbie is hot right now. Whereas, Henry Cavill is soon to be filming The Witcher for Netflix, which will be in my opinion a big job.

So yeah I agree with Jenkins that right now isn’t the time for a Justice League 2, yet, I still don’t see DC making the movies they need to in order to get the universe back on track. Of all the movie’s we really need, a Man of Steel sequel is highest on my list of priorities. Though I’d guess we will see Aquaman 2 before we ever see Kal El again. Man of Steel 2 might still make it out before The Batman as by then writer/director Matt Reeves may have only finished his first draft going by his current pace.

What do you make of all this, and do you think Jenkins would be a good choice for Justice League 2 if and when it arrives? Serve justice down in our comments section below.
