It was announced some time ago that Sony was pushing ahead with a movie adaptation of the video game series Uncharted. The movie would star Spider-Man actor Tom Holland and be directed by Shawn Levy. If you have never played any of the games then the best way I can describe Uncharted is like a modern-day version of Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider mixed together.
Fans were unhappy with Tom Holland’s casting, preferring a fan-made short movie which starred Nathan Fillion, and whilst no clear production date had been set, according to THR Shawn Levy has now left the project, though Tom Holland remains attached. The outlet says that Levy has now jumped on board a Ryan Reynolds project called Free Guy.
Free Guy is supposedly about a character (played by Reynolds) who discovers he is actually an NPC in a video game, for those that don’t know NPC stands for Non-Playable Character. Reynolds’ NPC then teams up with a human avatar to save the game world. The story was written by Matt Lieberman and picked up as a spec script in 2016.
Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) will star alongside Reynolds and other supporting roles have been said to be Lil Rel (Get Out) and Joe Keery (Stranger Things). According to the outlet, Comer will play the avatar, whose name is Molotov Girl. In the real world, she is a mousy programmer who actually created the game but was devastated when it was stolen from her. Rel will play Reynolds’ best friend and fellow Non-Playable Character who doesn’t believe his friend’s seemingly outlandish claims, and Keery will play a programmer who may or may not have a secret agenda.
Reynolds will produce via his Maximum Effort label along with Levy, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter with George Dewey exec producing the movie. There is no word on a start date for production and therefore a proposed release date at this time.
Sony will now be looking for a new helmer for their Uncharted movie as well, so we will let you know as soon as we find any news on that front.
