Disney has a very family and kid friendly image. Anything that can tarnish that image is immediately cut out. The James Gunn incident last year is a prime example of the lengths Disney will go to in order to maintain their image. Fox on the other hand has a large number of properties that do not shy away from sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll. Films like Alien, Deadpool, and Die Hard could never carry the Disney name or even be distributed by Buena Vista, and it’s that type of issue that people wonder about when it comes to Disney buying Fox.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter Alan Horn, Disney Studios’ chairman, was asked about Disney allowing “edgier PG-13 or even R-rated movies” and had this to say:
“With Fox, we can make movies that right now I say no to. Take Bohemian Rhapsody, which is PG-13. It’s a hit movie and very, very good. But there’s no way we could make it under the Disney label because the characters smoke cigarettes and other content. Nor could we have made [Warner Bros.’ R-rated] Oscar-winning Argo because the characters smoke and use the F-word. We always have to think about the smoking policy. The audience for a Disney movie may not know what they are going to see, but they know what they aren’t going to see. There are certain things we just can’t include because we’ll get letters.”
To be honest, I always figured Disney would continue to release Fox properties through Fox. With some Marvel properties being the exception. By buying Fox, but not dissolving the studio, Disney can now make movies that don’t fit the kid and family image and release them through Fox. It’s a win-win as far as I can see. We still get the mature stuff we desire and Disney keeps their name clean.
