Don’t worry, even in the age of Marvel Studios, Star Wars, Pixar sequel overload, and Disney remaking all their animated classics in live-action, Disney is still looking to create something original.
Deadline reports that Disney has acquired the pitch for Sadé, a live-action fairytale film about an African Princess. It is based on an original idea by Ola Shokunbi and Kubsey Reed Palmer. Dope producer Rick Famuyiwa is attached to produce.
The screenplay will be written by Shokunbi and Palmer. If focuses on a young African girl named Sadé who attempts to save her kingdom from a mysterious evil source, accepting her newly discovered magical warrior powers to protect herself and her people. With the help of the Prince, Sadé takes on an adventure that will allow her to embrace what makes her special, while saving the Kingdom.
I hate to sound naive, but doesn’t that sound a lot like Black Panther? My guess is the timing of this sale has to be related to that film. Hopefully it is a period piece, because otherwise I picture Wakanda when I hear of an “African Kingdom.” Maybe that’s just my Marvel obsession speaking.
On the other hand, at the risk of being called a SJW, I think it is great Disney is at least attempting to diversify their casts through some projects. One of the reasons Black Panther was so successful was that it tapped the most perfect Black cast, from the greats in the industry to those who deserve a better chance at more blockbusters. Disney has created another vehicle to showcase underutilized actors like this, so this sounds like a great move for Disney, Black Panther comparisons aside.
Sadé will Disney’s second African princess, following 2009’s The Princess and the Frog.
