We are in the midst of the modern streaming war, with a whole host of new contenders claiming to be the true leader of the Seven Kingdoms. Yes, I’m making a joke, but that’s honestly kinda what it’s feeling like at this point and time. Later on this year, we’ll be getting Disney+, Apple+, and WarnerMedia’s streaming service, and that’s not even mentioning next year’s expected NBCUniversal service.

But let’s tackle one thing at a time — the big daddy service that’s most likely to take a bite out of Netflix, the current streaming giant. I’m talking about Disney+. The service will include a bunch of Disney-branded content in addition to the Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar stuff. Additionally, there will be original movies and TV shows from all the major brands they own. And it’ll all come for a decent $6.99 a month. So how much can we expect them to take a bite out of Netflix?

Streaming Observer recently conducted an online survey where they asked 602 random male and female Netflix subscribers a bunch of questions with the goal of finding out how they felt about Disney’s upcoming service. While a large majority stated they have no plans to cancel Netflix, 12.3% said they “might” cancel it for Disney+ and 2.2% said they would definitely cancel Netflix for Disney+.

Taking those numbers into account and extrapolating that 14.5% of users who could cancel, they concluded that 8.7 million users may be heading out the door. This represents $116.9 million in potential lost revenue for Netflix. Additionally, two in five subscribers are interested in at least trying Disney+, so it is possible that number could actually be greater once customers have had a taste of what the House of Mouse is serving.

Sure, that may ultimately be a drop in the bucket for Netflix, but this comes even before recent news about another price hike for Netflix — a price hike that seems to be frustrating consumers more and more.
