Disney Hasn’t Greenlit Avatar 4 And 5 Yet

In case you needed another reminder at how many big properties Disney has under their control, I now present the Avatar franchise, whose first film is still the reigning king of the box office. In addition to the likes of Star Wars and Marvel Studios, Disney now has that behemoth, for better or worse. But where do things actually stand with the state of the series?

We’ve known for years that director James Cameron would be creating not one, not two, but FOUR sequels to the original Avatar film, meaning the series would ultimately span five separate movies. However, this Fox-bred franchise has never been a sure thing. Yes, Cameron and co. have shot the first two, but the second two movies would always have depended on the success of those first two.

It looks like that hasn’t changed with the acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox, as Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed to Barron’s:

“There are two more Avatars coming and two in the pipeline that have not been greenlit.”

As stated above, this isn’t exactly a shocker. Considering the cash being pumped into this thing, there’s no way they’d fund four all of them upfront without there being a real guarantee of return on investment. This is especially true considering the fact that Avatar, while successful, hasn’t really stuck around in the cultural zeitgeist. Plus, whenever the sequels are brought up, it almost feels like audiences are rolling their eyes at the idea of them, rather than gearing up to be entertained.

Are you looking forward to Avatar 2 and 3? If so, what is it about that first film that’s helping carry over excitement to the sequel? Let us know your thoughts down below!
