Disney Reportedly Developing Honey I Shrunk The Kids Reboot

I can see it now in my mind’s eye. The animated opening scene, the giant Cheerios, the giant ants, and the memorable James Horner score. One of Rick Moranis’ iconic roles. I’m, of course, talking about the classic live-action movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids — a film I watched so often as a child that the VHS tape was virtually destroyed by the end.

The film followed a group of kids who accidentally got shrunk by their dad’s shrink ray, and their adventures to get back to normal size. The film went on to spawn sequels and a TV series as well, but in the era of reboots and sequels, it would make complete sense to push to get another one of these movies made, even if Rick Moranis has long since given up acting as a profession.

Now, /Film is reporting that Disney is developing a new sequel/reboot, which will take place in the same universe as the movies (not the TV show, in case, for some reason, that was crossing your mind). Supposedly on board with the movie — which will be titled Shrunk — is Josh Gad, who will play a grown-up version of Wayne Szalinski’s son (Rick Moranis), Nick Szalinski. Apparently, even though it’s technically a “sequel” set in the same universe, it will have virtually the same plot, with Nick shrinking his own kids by accident.

The first question I had about this movie is whether or not this would be a theatrical release. With Disney+ on the horizon, it feels like the perfect type of movie to keep audiences home for the weekend. But, the outlet states that it is being developed as a theatrical release, which leads me to believe they will up the stakes and scopes of this one so that it can stand alongside standard blockbuster fare. While this wasn’t stated in the report, I would be surprised if this thing’s budget wasn’t around $150 million or so.

Disney is on the hunt for a director who is nostalgic for the original movie, so I imagine we’ll be getting a relatively young filmmaker for this, but who knows?
