I’m not going to lie. When it was first announced that Disney would be creating their own streaming service, I had major doubts. As much as we love them, I saw the streaming service as something they’d kinda half-ass. I imagined them putting on a rolling catalog of feature films, and figured they’d support it less and less as time went on. I imagined scenarios where they’d see Digital sales as the more profitable arena and sort of waffle between the two, not wanting to miss out on a quick buck on either side.

However, if this past weekend was any indication, it’s clear that they are all in on Disney+. Between their Marvel Studios projects, their Star Wars projects, and their own branded content, it’s clear that Disney+ will be the premium service to have later this year.

Even among us here at LRM Online, we are all in agreement that this will be one to get. Anecdotally, I haven’t met anyone who isn’t completely on board with what Disney+ will offer, and it looks like that is extending well past my own circle of friends.

TheWrap is reporting that 24% of Americans are saying they’re “extremely likely” to subscribe to Disney+, according to a survey from UBS. This equates to around 30.2 million households. And then, 19% said they are “somewhat likely,” which can add another 24.2 million. This adds to a grand total of 54.4 million, assuming they all actually subscribe, of course, which is a tall order. 

This is nearly double the 30 million Disney projected they’d get by the end of 2024. Of course, it’s easy enough to fill out something on a survey, and something else altogether to actually go through with it, but it’s fair to say that there’s a lot of good faith Disney has from its fans.
