Disney’s Lucasfilm Purchase Has Officially Turned A Profit

Six years ago, on October 30, 2012, it was announced that The Walt Disney Company would be acquiring Lucasfilm, and with it, franchises like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. In the time since then, we have had four feature films, a ton of figures, novels, comics, merch, and everything in-between. Needless to say, they haven’t been wanting for revenue streams for Star Wars.

Thus far, the Star Wars films have grossed a combined $4.8 billion. Sure, that sounds like they alone make this endeavor profitable, but the budgets and marketing behind these movies can’t be overlooked, and when taken into account, you’re left with profits closer to $2 billion — still solid, but nowhere near the $4.05 billion Disney forked over to acquire Lucasfilm. But, as stated above, movies aren’t the only available revenue stream.

Thanks to all things like licensing agreements, apparel, toys, Blu-ray and DVD sales, novelizations, and probably a million other things I’m overlooking, Disney has officially been able to recoup all their costs. Speaking with CNBC, comScore analyst Paul Dergarabedian called this “one of the smartest acquisitions in history.”

Sadly, we don’t have any specific figures as to how much Disney has profited outside of the movies, but things are still looking bright, no matter what The Last Jedi haters think (Sorry, had to take an unwarranted jab). We have a new TV show in the works from Jon Favreau, a trilogy from Rian Johnson, a series of films from Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, and even theme park attractions in the works.

Disney may officially be profitable, but it’s far from done making boatloads of cash.
