Don’t Expect A Minecraft 2 Any Time Soon

Minecraft is a juggernaut. It’s been released on virtually every platform available, and has sold over 150 million copies, coming in second to Tetris as the highest-selling game of all time. Additionally, they have over 90 million active users who play the game and interact with the community. Needless to say, they’re doing pretty well for themselves, and like many other warm-blooded Americans, it’d be easy to think that the next big step would be to drop a sequel.

You have a huge number of fans, so releasing another game like this would basically be printing money, right? I think it goes without saying that, yes, this would mean tens of millions of dollars of money would very quickly flow to Microsoft. But that’s not the approach they want to take as Minecraft head Helen Chang said to Business Insider:

“I really don’t think that makes sense for Minecraft, given the community. It’s something that always fractures the community.”

And she has a point. Minecraft is great, but what’s helped it last so long up until this point isn’t just the game, but those who play and create amazing work with it.

Why would they go in and just create another one where they have to create their install base from the ground-up? It seems like a surefire to way to kill an already-vibrant community, right? Of course, they are releasing a side game called Minecraft: Dungeons, but it’s clear that this is a side game and not an iteration on the original concept.
