Downton Abbey: A New Era | Allen Leech and Laura Carmichael Interview [Exclusive]

After six years as a television series and a film, Downtown Abbey: A New Era is ready to turn over a new leaf as it moves into the Roaring Twenties. On the aristocratic side, the Crawley family sets its sights on an unusual inheritance with the matriarch Violet Crawley. Some of the family, including Tom Branson (Allen Leech) and Edith Pelham (Laura Carmichael), must travel to the French Rivera to uncover the story behind the inherited mansion from an old benefactor.

Here is the synopsis:

From award-winning creator, Julian Fellowes comes to the motion picture event Downton Abbey: A New Era. The much-anticipated cinematic return of the global phenomenon reunites the beloved cast as they go on a grand journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the Dowager Countess’ newly inherited villa.

The film also stars Hugh Bonneville, Jim Carter, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Joanne Froggatt, Michael Fox, Harry Hadden-Paton, Robert James-Collier, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Tuppence Middleton, Lesley Nicol, Douglas Reith, Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton, Penelope Wilton, Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, Dominic West, and Jonathan Zaccai. Simon Curtis directed the film from the screenplay written by Fellowes.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta talked with actors Allen Leech and Laura Carmichael on their experiences in France and the success of this beloved franchise.

Allen Leech is best known as Tom Branson in the historical drama series Downton Abbey and as Paul Prenter in 2018’s biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. His professional acting debut came in the 1998 production of A Streetcar Named Desire. The first major film appearance was with Cowboys & Angeles. In 2004, he earned an Irish Film & Television Awards nomination with his performance as Mo Chara in Man About Dog. Also, he played Marcus Agrippa in the HBO historical drama series Rome.

Laura Carmichael is best known for her performance as Lady Edity Crawly in the Downton Abbey series. Other television roles included The Heart of Thomas Hardy and End of Our Street. In 2011, she speared in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and in Madame Bovary.

Downton Abbey: A New Era is in theaters on May 20.
