After two major storytelling blockbusters with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Dune: Part Two, studio LAIKA tapped Jon Spaihts to make his directorial debut in its live-action division with an original untitled film.

Spaihts is also known for his screenplays for 2012’s Prometheus, 2016’s Passengers, and the comic book film Doctor Strange. He was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards for Dune.

For the upcoming untitled film, it will be a tale of a woman investigating a mystery that took place during a week she cannot remember.

“LAIKA has long admired Jon’s iconic work as a screenwriter,” said LAIKA’s president of Live Action Film & Series Matt Levin. “He is one of the most imaginative and inventive storytellers working today, and we’re honored to partner with him as he brings his unique vision and sound to the director’s chair for the first time with a wholly original idea that is thought-provoking as it is moving.”

LAIKA studio is best known for stop-motion animation films, including ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Missing Link, and Kubo and the Two Strings. It recently re-released 2009’s Caroline in theaters. The studio expanded itself into the live-action genre with Crumble, which was directed and written by Brian Duffield.

The untitled film does not have a release date at this time.
