You remember Doc Savage, right? He’s the adventurer and all-around renaissance man who graced the pages of dime store novels decades and decades back. He’s pretty much the face you imagine when you think of badass, square-jawed, man’s man of decades gone by. Given our current era, where nothing is sacred, and is open to getting remade in one way or another, Doc Savage is the perfect Indiana Jones-type character to create a franchise around.
Writer-director Shane Black has been attached to the project for years, and the man who has been on board to actually portray the character is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. But what is the status of the project? It’s been a good while since we’ve had an update, and Shane Black has been busy working on The Predator. Luckily, Johnson recently sat down with Collider, and when asked about the film, this was his response:
“First of all, love Shane Black and we’ve had multiple meetings on that project that we were going to work on. Right now, Shane’s doing things. I’m doing things. That project had a few issues, not creative issues but more so business affairs issues — where the project once was, who had rights to it, where we were trying to move it to. There was a lot of that, which we’re still kind of working through. At the end of the day, Shane’s such a spectacular writer or director, but whether it’s that project or something else, we’ve made a pact that we’re going to work together at some point in our careers.”

Honestly, it sounds like this may be one of those movies that just isn’t going to happen. With so many other properties out there — and so many original ideas I’m sure Black has in his brain — why wade through all the red tape to resurrect a character few people remember when you can basically make the same movie without the name?
Regardless, I do look forward to seeing whatever Black and Johnson work on together. No matter what it is, I’m sure it’ll be a whole lot of fun.
