Every year, it seems like Dwayne Johnson finds a way to compress years of work into a single year’s time. This summer season alone, he’s managed to headline two big-budget action pics — Rampage, and the upcoming Skyscraper. However, superhero fans will know that Johnson has also been signed on to play DC’s Black Adam for…(looks at calendar)…what seems like around a decade, but is actually been closer to five years.

But when can we expect the film to shoot? Black Adam’s nemesis, Shazam, will be getting his own film early next year, and with that in mind, it would make sense for Black Adam to be brought into the picture sooner rather than later. Speaking with the outlet FilmStarts (translation via Coming Soon), Johnson gave an update on the film’s progress.
“With Black Adam I don’t think we’re going to start early next year. Early next year right now it looks like I’m going to be shooting Jumanji, and then after that if everything goes well I’ll shoot a movie called Red Notice with [Skyscraper director] Rawson Thurber again, with Gal Gadot, and another actor yet to be named. But Black Adam possibly at the end of next year. It’s coming along great, the script is coming along great we’re very happy with it.”
“Without giving anything away, there MIGHT be maybe a cameo or two of some of the other DC superheroes. We’ll see. That’s been the beauty of Black Adam as we’ve been developing it is that we could make a movie that just stood on its own too as well, but that’s also the beauty of those universes coming together at DC.”
Unlike many of the other DC films, it’s always felt like Black Adam has kind of been off on its own, which one could argue is a good thing. They don’t seem to be rushing things and taking it all in stride.
Right now, DC’s slate consists of Aquaman, Shazam, and Wonder Woman, with Birds of Prey rumored to be next, so Black Adam could be a solid five films and two-plus years away.
