Dwayne Johnson’s Big Trouble In Little China To Be A Continuation Of Original

We live in an era of sequels, reboots, and remakes. We’ve seen nearly every property under the sun get reimagined in some way, much to the chagrin of many fans of the older properties. However, in addition to full-on rebooting things, there has been a trend in continuations of these stories. Movies like Jurassic World and the upcoming Halloween are evidence of this trend — and it’s one that really seems to be hitting the sweet spot with fans. It’s new and updated, but it doesn’t take away from the experiences they had decades ago.

Well, it looks like one other property will be getting the same treatment very soon. According to report from Collider, Dwayne Johnson’s upcoming Big Trouble in Little China will actually be a continuation of the John Carpenter original film. Here’s what producer Hiram Garcia had to say about the project:

“There’s a lot of things going on with [Big Trouble in Little China]. We are in the process of developing that, and let me tell you, the idea is not to actually remake Big Trouble in Little China. You can’t remake a classic like that, so what we’re planning to do is we’re going to continue the story. We’re going to continue the universe of Big Trouble in Little China. Everything that happened in the original exists and is standalone and I think there’s only one person that could ever play Jack Burton, so Dwayne would never try and play that character. So we are just having a lot of fun. We’re actually in a really great space with the story that we’ve cracked. But yeah, no remake. It is a continuation, and we are deep into development on that as well, and I think you’ll start hearing some things about that probably soon.”

Many fans will be happy to hear about this. While the movie is over three decades old, the diehards worship at the altar of John Carpenter of Kurt Russell, and while Johnson has plenty of charisma to take on the character of Jack Burton, it just wouldn’t be the same. But who will Johnson be playing and how will his character connect to Burton? Will Russell be returning as the original character?

Luckily, we still have no idea when to expect this movie, so there is plenty of time for them to figure that out as time goes on.
