Eddie Murphy Reveals Coming To America 2 Rating

Paramount Pictures’ Coming to America is just a few months older than I am as it was released in June of 1988. The romantic comedy was directed by John Landis based of a story that was created by the star of the film, Eddie Murphy. He plays Akeem Joffer, the crown prince of the fictional African nation of Zamunda who travels to Queens, New York looking for his “Queen”. This film was R-rated so with the sequel in the works, we had all been wondering if this film too would go for the same rating.

It’s interesting to note that a lot of Murphy’s recent films have been considered family friendly like The Haunted Mansion, A Thousand Words and Imagine That. He has recently returned to R-rated comedy in Craig Brewer’s Dolemite is My Name. Recently Cinemablend talked with Murphy about the reason why he had stepped away from r-rated comedies in favor of more family friendly films. During this conversation we also learned about the rating for Coming to America 2.

“I think what happened was, there was a period when Hollywood was on some PG-13… that’s how you reached most audiences. And there was, maybe, a 15-year period where that’s all everybody was doing. So I got caught up in that shit. But no, doing this movie, we went, ‘This movie has to be rated R because of the way Rudy Ray Moore was.’ But I’m doing Coming to America next, and that’s PG-13”, said Murphy.

Looks like the Coming to America sequel will be PG-13 which is my opinion is the right choice. This way parents who remember the original film are able to share the sequel with their kids, which of course means that they will be able to sell more tickets at the box office. I don’t think that the rating will hold back the comedy, especially in this day and age when many people are so sensitive about all kinds of jokes. It will be great to see some of the returning cast members but some additional cast members like Tracy Morgan and Leslie Jones.
