El Camino Writer-Director Vince Gilligan Doesn’t Think Non-Breaking Bad Watcher Would Like It

Breaking Bad has been in the pop culture zeitgeist for well over a decade now, and it’s been several years since the show exploded following its streaming on Netflix. So it’s almost a form of poetic justice that El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie would actually stream on Netflix within the next month.

As with any film that follows an acclaimed series, there are a lot of questions fans have, and one such question is whether or not non-watchers of said show will actually be able to follow and appreciate it? Breaking Bad creator and El Camino writer-director Vince Gilligan holds no illusions about this matter.

“If, after 12 years, you haven’t watched Breaking Bad, you’re probably not going to start now,” Gilligan told THR. “If you do, I hope that this movie would still be engaging on some level, but there’s no doubt in my mind that you won’t get as much enjoyment out of it. We don’t slow down to explain things to a non-Breaking Bad audience. I thought early on in the writing of the script, ‘Maybe there’s a way to have my cake and eat it too. Maybe there’s a way to explain things to the audience.’ If there was a way to do that, it eluded me.”

So, if you haven’t watched it, don’t expect this film to hold your hand. And if you have watched the show, hopefully you at least remember the important bits so that overall enjoyment won’t be negatively affected. Luckily, the show is streaming on Netflix now, and given how short it is, it’s not improbable that you could make it through before El Camino’s October 11 streaming date.
