Recently, LRM Online was privileged to preview the trailer and be part of a press conference for Elvis. This included the director Baz Luhrmann and the lead star Austin Butler. In the conversation they shared with is the reasons why they wanted to make this film of one of the most iconic stars in history.

Elvis

Luhrmann talked about how characters in films are just the canvas for greater ideas and themes. How Elvis’ life was a perfect canvas for the exploration of three decades of our country’s history. The truth is that in this modern era, the life of Elvis Presley could not be a better canvas on which to explore America in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.” Said Luhrmann. “It’s a mythical life that he lived up to a very young 42 years. But that 42 years is three great lives put into a short period of time. What is extraordinary about it is that life is culturally at the center of the 50s and socially the 60s and actually the 70s and it’s a great canvas to explore America, that’s what drew me in.”

For the star of the film, Butler stated that he was drawn to the project looking for the humanity behind the megastar. “There’s many reasons. But fundamentally getting to explore the humanity of somebody that has become the wallpaper of society in a way. He is such an icon and he is held up to a superhuman status. So to get to explore that for years now and learn why he was the that he was and find the human within that icon. That was really such a joy that I can do it for the rest of my life probably. But that paired with the fact that I get to work the one of the greatest filmmakers to ever live.” Commented Butler.
