Endgame Sinks Titanic To Become The 2nd Highest Grossing Film Of All Time

“Whatever it takes.” The team building tag line from Avengers: Endgame is also something felt by millions of box office geeks like myself when it comes to toppling Titanic and Avatar. Do I get any money from Endgame’s success? No. Is it petty to want a movie, almost any movie, to top Avatar? Yes. Do I care? Do you?

The finale to the Infinity Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe dominated the box office, as expected, in its second weekend taking in an estimated $145 million domestically. This was a bit less than early projections of $150 million, although this is likely due to a large number of people who refused to wait for the second weekend out of fear of spoilers. I would be interested in a poll of opening weekend viewers to see if this theory is true. The domestic total now sits at $619 million putting the film at the ninth spot for all time domestic take. It is $1 million behind The Last Jedi, $40 million behind Titanic, and $317 million behind the all-time domestic record of The Force Awakens.

The worldwide numbers are a staggering $2.188 billion setting the movie just above the most annoying (personal opinion) box office success, Titanic. However, this movie still needs another $600 million to top Avatar and considering that western films don’t hang around in big foreign markets like China as long as they do domestically, this task is looking as difficult as ever. The thing to remember is how long movies spend in theaters in recent years. It’s nothing new for a film to be available on digital within 100 days of theatrical release and on Bluray within 120 days. Avatar enjoyed nearly 32 weeks in the theater without competing against its home video release. It was also heavily featured on more 3D screens than Endgame is. To be honest… I love how quickly I get my movies on home video these days. I can remember having to wait nearly a year for Jurassic Park to hit VHS… Yes, I said VHS.

Do you think Endgame can top Avatar? Am I wrong for being so invested in this? How pathetic am I? Let us know in the comments below!
