Strangely this is not the first time I have heard that Eternals is Oscar caliber, however that remains to be seen. According to Discussing Film in their latest awards article, they rate Eternals as one of the top films to have a chance at the Academy Awards this year. Though, not because they decided to randomly choose Eternals, instead sources at Marvel told them so. Feel free to check out the outlet’s full awards predictions in the link above. However, here is what was said about Eternals that I took interest in.
Sources tell us that Chloe Zhao’s Eternals “plays like an Oscar-caliber film” and is “unlike anything Marvel has done”, sidestepping many of the audience-friendly conventions that tend to hold other blockbusters of its kind back from major awards success.
As I said above I have heard elsewhere that Eternals is Oscar caliber, but you never know how much a studio is blowing smoke up a movies butt for marketing. Then again, do any Marvel fans care what the Academy thinks about MCU movies? I don’t give a damn about the Academy’s strange politics and back slapping. I could go on and on about some of the criminally overlooked movies of the last 50 years. However, that’s dull and I’m guessing most of our readers probably feel the same way.

What I don’t get is why Marvel Studios keeps pushing for Academy recognition when they don’t need it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you they should not aim to make wonderful movies. What I am saying is why push things like they did with Black Panther? Why set expectations for Eternals too highly by mentioned the Oscars in connection with it? Ultimately maybe some Marvel Studios staff would take personal pride in an award, but that’s not really paramount to the MCU’s success. Disney wants Marvel Studios to make them money by making movies the fans love to see. Therefore, who cares what the academy thinks?
If Eternals really is that good, the Academy will likely snub it anyway. Likely in favor of a movie about Philosophy narrated in Ancient Greek by a Goldfish hooked up to a computer. Let me ask you, do you care on iota whether Eternals is Oscar Caliber or do you jus hope it’s a good movie period? Leave any thoughts below as always.
