Reportedly Disney has mad the decision for Eternals to be theatrical only release instead of a hybrid option. The news comes on the back of the relative good run so far for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The information comes from Matt Belloni on his What I’m Hearing page. Belloni is former editor of THR and a former Entertainment layer, so his stock and connections are pretty high.
If you remember Disney CEO Bob Chapek recently said they would reserve the right to make that decision for each movie individually. As far as Belloni has heard, that decision has now been made.
After Disney C.E.O. Bob Chapek basically dared Shang-Chi to perform in theaters over Labor Day weekend, and it did $94 million domestically, he couldn’t possibly put Eternals on Disney+ day-and-date, right? I’m told Chapek and distribution chief Kareem Daniels have made their decision on the November movie’s fate, and it will indeed receive an exclusive theatrical run. (Disney declined to comment.) Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Angelina Jolie’s agents can exhale now.

Eternals is coming out on November 5th, and now we know it will not also be appearing on Disney+ immediately. Not sure how I feel about that as so far I have not had a sniff at a chance to go see Shang-Chi yet. I guess I’ll have to properly plan to catch Eternals in a decent timeframe. I’m hoping to see Shang-Chi for the first time next weekend.
I think I know a little more than I should about the plot of Eternals. From what I have heard there are a few big surprises to how the narrative unfolds. I want to see that for myself before the fans start tearing it apart, for good or bad, online.
What do you think of this news that Eternals to be theatrical only? Happy, annoyed, or not bothered? As always, leave any thoughts below.
