Eugenio Derbez Inspires Students as a Teacher in Radical Trailer

Radical

Teaching is one of the most challenging professions today around the world. A teacher must balance school districts’ and administrators’ beliefs and standards while balancing their methods to inspire students in the classroom.

One real-life teacher, Sergio Juárez Correa of Mexico, turned one poverty-stricken classroom barely surviving academically into one of the top-achieving classes in the nation.

His real-life headlines, including a feature article in Wired Magazine that highlighted his “out of the box” teaching methods and his star 12-year-old student, Paloma Noyola Bueno, once considered as the next Steve Jobs.

Their stories are retold in the narrative film Radical, starring Eugenio Derbez.

Here is the official synopsis of the film:

In a Mexican border town plagued by neglect, corruption, and violence, a frustrated teacher (Eugenio Derbez) tries a radical new method to unleash the curiosity and potential of his students…and maybe even their genius. Based on a true story.

The film also stars Daniel Haddad, Jenifer Trejo, Mia Fernanda Solis, and Danilo Guardiola. Christopher Zalla wrote and directed the movie inspired by the Wired Magazine article.

There are plenty of excellent teacher-student stories such as Dead Poets Society and Stand and Deliver that have inspired teachers to overcome specific odds with the students and outside influences.

Radical adds to the familiar storytelling with a delightful and lovable performance from Eugenio Derbez. The film won the “Festival Favorite” award at the Sundance Film Festival 2023, including praise from yours truly.

Radical is in theaters on November 3.
