Eugenio Derbez is hands down my favorite Mexican comedian. He has been the star, writer, director and producer of some of my favorite Spanish comedy television shows. For example Al Derecho y Al Derbez, XHDRBZ and La Familia P. Luche.

In the past six years, Derbez had taken his talents to Hollywood where he has produced and starred in a line of hits which began with the film Instructions Not Included, which grossed $44 million domestically and $100 million worldwide. Recently, his latest film Overboard became the highest grossing Hispanic movie in the U.S. this year grossing $51 million domestically and $92 million worldwide.

Now Variety is reporting that he will be returning to television in a new Amazon Prime original comedy series, LOL: Last One Laughing. This is an adaptation of Amazon Prime’s hit Japanese game show HITOSHI MATSUMOTO Presents Documental, which stars Matsumoto. In the show, he leads 10 comedians in a type of “battle of laughter behind closed doors” where the point is to make the others laugh in a closed room. The last person who manages to keep a straight face wins a cash prize. Derbez’s adaptation will be the same but with 10 renowned Mexican comedians.

Derbez commented about the project saying that, “‘Last One Laughing’ is like nothing I’ve seen in comedy and certainly very different from anything I’ve done on television in my career.”

“I’m really excited to show the world some of the amazing comedic talent coming out of my country,” Derbez said.

Head of content for Latino America for Amazon Prime Pablo Iacoviello also commented about working with Derbez and the new show.

“We’re thrilled to be working with such a talented actor and creator like Derbez who continues to bring global attention to Mexico’s comedy scene,” said Iacoviello. “There has never been a show like this before in Mexico, and we think Prime members are going to love how Derbez and these amazing comedians go wild and test each other’s limits in the name of laughter.”

Serving as the showrunner for LOL: Last One Laughing will is Juan Maldonado of Litopos Productions. It is being produced by Derbez’s 3Pas Studios and his partners Ben Odell and Endemol Shine Boomdog. The series is set to debut worldwide on Amazon Prime Video later this year.
